Raise a glass: What the DC area drinks to ring in the new year

What will D.C.-area revelers be drinking when they ring in the new year?

Whether it’s Champagne or a gin fizz might be influenced by where you live.

Career builder Zippia said it used Google Trends to put together a list of what will be in all those clinking glasses at midnight.

Not surprisingly, Champagne is the most popular drink on New Year’s Eve overall, being favored by 21 states, including Virginia and Maryland. D.C. raises a glass with a rum and Coke.

The bubbly stuff also leads the way in alcohol sales, followed by red wine and vodka.

States that prefer something else include New Mexico, which goes for amaretto sours; in Wisconsin, it’s mulled wine. In North Dakota, the preference is lemon drops; in Mississippi, they reach for the strawberry daiquiris. And Alaska is toasting the new year with a screwdriver.

See the complete map of preferences on the Zippia website.
