Maryland man charged with robbing Wells Fargo bank in Reston

Police in Fairfax County, Virginia, said an off-duty officer helped with the arrest of a Maryland man they say is connected to a bank robbery in Reston, as well as other heists in the D.C. area.

Zachary Allen Hunter, 37, has been charged with one count of robbery and is being held without bond, the Fairfax County Police Department said in a news release.

Police said shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Hunter went inside a Wells Fargo Bank in Reston, implied to the bank teller that he had a firearm and passed a note to the teller demanding money.

After leaving the bank with the cash, Hunter drove off in a Mercedes sedan. Soon after, officers were sent to search the area and monitor local highway exits.

According to the release, an off-duty officer in the area heard sirens, listened to his radio and saw the Mercedes in question turning down Lincoln Lane in Tysons. After other law enforcement were alerted to the vehicle’s location, officers found Hunter slouched inside the car and he was taken into custody.

Police said they recovered the money from the robbery, but found no firearm. They believe Hunter is connected to other robberies in the D.C. area and are in contact with federal officials regarding additional charges.

Police ask anyone with more information about the robbery to call 703-246-7800.
