D.C.’s 311 phone service will now play the District’s homegrown Go-Go music in the background while people navigate the service menu.
DC311 provides a one-stop service experience for residents and visitors looking for services and information 24 hours a day and 365 days a year in the District.
When people call 311 and go through the service request system to ask for services like bulk pickups, pothole repair and trash removal, they will hear Go-Go selections created by the first cohort of the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation’s Crank Music Program, the Office of Unified Communications said.
“Through the support of Mayor Bowser, programs like this change the narrative and the landscape of opportunities for our young people, which begins to spread positively throughout the community,” DPR Director Delano Hunter said. “This program is a way to redirect energy and crank out a new beat of hope.”
The Crank Music Program provides the D.C. youth with hands-on experience such as music production, performance and management of the Go-Go music. The Office of Unified Communications said DC311 gets around 1.8 million calls per year.
It’s an opportunity for personal and professional development, positive engagement, skill building and developing a sense of purpose for the youth.
“We are thrilled to integrate Washington DC’s official music, written and performed by our city’s incredibly gifted young people, into the 311 experience. It is the perfect way to incorporate the sound of DC within the heart of city services” Interim Director Karima Holmes said.
