Police ID motorcyclist killed in crash with Montgomery Co. police cruiser

Montgomery County police have named the motorcyclist killed Thursday evening after crashing into the back of an officer’s patrol car on Maryland’s Intercounty Connector.

Thirty-one-year-old Carlos Ivan Diaz-Franco, a Silver Spring resident, was killed when he crashed into the back of a Montgomery County police officer’s cruiser on the westbound Intercounty Connector between Georgia Avenue and Shady Grove Road, the Montgomery County Police Department said in an update Friday.

Around 7:28 p.m. Thursday, an on-duty Montgomery County officer notified the agency that a motorcycle had crashed into the back of his patrol car.

The collision threw Diaz-Franco and his 2020 BMW S 1000 RR motorcycle into the eastbound lanes of Route 200. First responders declared Diaz-Franco dead on the scene; the officer was treated at a hospital for nonlife threatening injuries and released.

The ICC was closed for nearly seven hours during Thursday evening commute for a crash investigation. It reopened just before 3 a.m. Friday.

MCPD asks anyone with information on the crash to contact detectives at 240-773-6620. The agency described the motorcycle involved as a red, white and blue sport bike that may have been traveling with a group of other motorcycles.
