5 things to know:

-Washington is one of the best point guards in the 2022 class and one of the few true point guards with a chance to be taken in the lottery. He’s got good size for the position at nearly 6-foot-4 (6-foot-3 3/4 at the combine), he’s quick and has solid court vision. Washington can both score and make plays for others. He attacks the paint aggressively, has the strength to absorb contact and a knack for smooth finishes. As a passer, he makes quick decisions on closeouts and is a natural at throwing lobs. He can be a well-rounded offensive player in the NBA.

-His shooting numbers were fairly average, so teams will have to take a closer look at the context, like how he was shooting 41.3% through the first two months of his freshman season before his numbers dropped off. He also played through a knee injury late in the year. And if you go back to his high school days, he was consistently a good outside shooter. He also has a smooth shooting form with a compact and quick release. It’s highly possible he ends up a plus-shooter in the pros.

-Washington is considered a fairly average defender and his ceiling appears to be higher on the offensive end. His best traits defensively would be his ability to create turnovers on steals and also his rebounding, which stands out for his size and position. Washington had five games this season with three or more steals and nine games with five or more rebounds, including a 12-rebound performance against Ohio in November. At this point a fair expectation is that he can be a solid defender, but likely not an elite one.

-He could follow in a long line of Kentucky guards who flew under the radar in the draft. Devin Booker, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Tyler Herro, Tyrese Maxey and Immanuel Quickley were all picked outside of the top-10 but have gone on to become very good NBA players and in each case a draft steal.

-Washington broke John Wall’s single-game assist record at Kentucky with 17 dimes against Georgia in January. The previous mark was 16, set by Wall in 2009.

Fit with Wizards:

Washington is one of the best fits in the draft for what the Wizards need. He is a point guard who makes plays for others, he’s got good size for the position and he’s a decent shooter with the chance to be more than that down the road. The Wizards could check off multiple boxes by drafting him.

That said, it’s highly probable a better player is still available when they are picking 10th. Washington is projected to go a bit later in the first round. The Wizards could likely still get him if they traded back a few picks. There is, however, always a chance the mock drafts are wrong and perhaps they see him as a better option than Dyson Daniels, who is currently projected to be the best point guard in their range. Or, maybe Daniels is gone by 10 and they really want to get their point guard of the future, so they turn to Washington.

If Washington did come to… Washington, he would likely start out in a bench role but maybe not for long. The Wizards could sign a bridge starter with the hope Washington takes over that role by the end of his rookie season or going into Year 2. An ideal scenario could look like Maxey in Philadelphia, as he showed flashes as a rookie and then had a breakout sophomore season. Also like Maxey, Washington could earn minutes by playing both guard positions.

Regardless of how much he would help in the short term, Washington would represent the future for the Wizards at point guard. They would draft him with the expectation he could be a quality starter for many years to come. If he hones his outside shot and becomes a capable defender, he could turn into a really good NBA player.

Bradley Beal, Wizards hammered by Celtics’ tough defense in road loss

Wizards hammered by Celtics' defense in road loss originally appeared on NBC Sports WashingtonThe Washington Wizards lost to the Boston Celtics 112-94 on Sunday night. Here are five takeaways from what went down...An early-season testAs soon as the schedule was released, it was clear the road for the Wizards was going to become much more difficult beginning Sunday, as they faced the Boston Celtics to begin one of their most challenging stretches of the entire season. Sure enough, it was a measuring stick game that showed the Wizards they have some work to do to get on the level of the best teams in the conference.Washington lost by 18 points and trailed by as many as 25, as Boston held them to 38.8% shooting from the field and 7-for-32 (21.9%) from three. Kristaps Porzingis was the main standout with 17 points and 13 rebounds, but the Wizards overall looked outmatched against a very good Boston team. Washington will now have to hope they get better over time as their new players develop chemistry together. Perhaps they will find better results in the next matchup on Nov. 27 in Boston. The Wizards are now 3-3 on the season as they return home to play the Sixers on Halloween on the second night of a back-to-back.Beal had major troubleThe Celtics entered this game ranked 26th in defensive rating per NBA.com, when last year they ranked No. 1 by the same site. This game was a reminder that early-season small sample sizes can be misleading because they looked like the dominant defense of yesteryear in this one. While they made it tough for everyone, their ability to slow Bradley Beal down stood out above all.Beal didn't score a single point until he made a free throw with 2:29 left in the third quarter. It was the first time he went scoreless in a first half since 2018. Beal missed his first 12 shots from the field. Boston has a very good defensive backcourt with Malcolm Brogdon and reigning defensive player of the year Marcus Smart, plus a lot of length behind them. But it must have also been just an off-night for Beal, as he usually finds a way to score. He had 12 points and eight assists, but shot 4-for-16.Brown was a problemThe Celtics jumped all over the Wizards early, forcing a Washington timeout at 11-2 in the first quarter. Not surprisingly, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown were key contributors, as they combined to take Boston's first 11 shots. While Tatum lit the spark with two back-to-back threes, Brown kept the flame going. Amazingly, Brown outscored the Wizards all by himself in the first quarter with 16 points. The Wizards only scored 15. His continued ascendance is a big reason why the Celtics made it all the way to the NBA Finals last season and could be even better this year. Brown had 24 points, while Tatum wasn't far behind with 23. Good minutes from GoodwinRookie Johnny Davis once again got the nod in Delon Wright's spot as the backup guard, essentially playing as a two on offense and a one on defense. But he got into very quick foul trouble, subbing out with three fouls in only three minutes. While Davis had one nice offensive play on a cutting layup, head coach Wes Unseld Jr. had seen enough. He went away from him after that.Davis was effectively replaced by Jordan Goodwin, who immediately made an impact on several plays. He made a long two, then had a steal and a block, all in the same sequence. Remember, he was 2-time All-Defense in the Atlantic-10 at Saint Louis. He's a scrappy player and did not seem fazed at all by going up against the reigning conference champs. No Kispert, Gill hurt?Last week, Unseld Jr. said Corey Kispert was "really close" to returning, that he wouldn't play on Friday night against Indiana but it was only a matter of days. However, he was not ready to play on Sunday against Boston. Kispert remains out with a sprained left ankle and, as long as there were no setbacks since Unseld Jr. gave those comments, it seems very probable he plays this week. Maybe we will see him Monday against the Sixers. The Wizards, meanwhile, may have a new injury to keep tabs on if NBC Sports Washington color commentator Drew Gooden was correct with an observation during Sunday's game. He said he saw Anthony Gill suffer an injury to his index finger. Gill stayed in there, but according to Gooden, he had to pop it back into place. Gill gave the Wizards 10 points in 19 minutes.
