A student was stabbed in the parking lot of Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland, on Monday morning. Montgomery County police spokeswoman Shiera Goff said the student had injuries that were not life-threatening, following a fight between two boys around 10 a.m. Both boys are students at the school. A suspect is in custody. Police said later Monday that charges are pending.

In a letter to parents, Principal Renay Johnson said one student had a knife and assaulted another student, who had “cutting wounds.” That student was taken to the hospital. Students and staff notified the administration and Montgomery County police, which responded to the school. The student who had the knife left the school but was taken back to the school by the student’s parents and taken into custody by police. During the incident, the school was placed in lockdown to “ensure the safety of all students and staff,” Johnson’s letter said. The lockdown was modified to a shelter-in-place at 11 a.m. during the investigation Council member Will Jawando said in a statement that calling the police was an example of “appropriate involvement,” noting that some may use what happened to push back on the efforts of the Student Wellness Action Group, or SWAG. The council’s Joint Committee on Education and Culture and Health and Human Services will be receiving a briefing related to SWAG, which “highlights the need for more mental health support and investments in student wellbeing,” Jawando said.
