Teen fatally struck on Route 15 in Haymarket

A car fatally struck a 13-year-old boy Tuesday afternoon on Route 15 in Haymarket, Virginia, near Graduation Drive, Prince William County police said.

The accident occurred in the area of James Madison Highway and Graduation Drive near Battlefield High School and Reagan Middle School at around 12:35 p.m. Prince William County police said the driver, identified as a 46-year-old woman from Chantilly, was driving a 2019 Honda Odssey, heading northbound on James Madison Highway.

Police determined the driver had a green light at the intersection as the teenager was attempting to cross James Madison Highway. After hitting the pedestrian, the driver stayed at the scene. She was not injured at the scene.

WTOP news partner InsideNova reports the victim was taken to UVA Haymarket Medical Center, where he later died. Prince William County police said due to Virginia law, the teenager’s identity was not disclosed.

As a result of the crash and the police investigation, Northbound James Madison/Route 15 was closed between Lightner Road and Graduation Drive. WTOP’s Dave Dildine in the Traffic Center said the road opened about 3 p.m.

Police did not say if the driver will be charged but they are still investigating the incident.

Another 13-year-old boy died in January after being hit by two cars on the same intersection.

How Prince William County schools’ data leak impacts students, families

Prince William County schools mistakenly shared student and parent personal information with Hazel Health, a third-party partner of the school division. The division on Dec. 19 sent a notification to the affected families notifying them that on Dec. 16 Hazel Health inadvertently sent a welcome text to families who had not opted into the provider’s service. Hazel Health is the division’s contracted provider of mental telehealth services to students at no cost to families. Following the mistaken welcome text, the school system discovered it had “unintentionally disclosed” personal identifiable information for those who had not opted into the service, the division said in its statement to the affected families.
