A dump truck hit an overpass in Fredericksburg, Virginia, closing parts of Interstate 95 and causing heavy traffic delays on Tuesday afternoon. At around 1:30 p.m., the northbound lanes of I-95 were shut down north of Exit 133 (Route 17) after the bed of a dump truck hit the overpass for Truslow Road in Stafford County. The Truslow Road bridge also closed to traffic. At around 4 p.m., the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) tweeted that the dump truck had been dislodged and was removed by a loader, although inspections of the bridge continue. About half an hour later, VDOT said northbound lanes had reopened, along with the Truslow Road overpass, although it cautioned drivers to be alert for crews working on the eastbound shoulder of the overpass.

Stafford County Fire and Rescue said the driver of the truck was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The bridge was opened this spring as part of the I-95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension project. The new bridge above I-95 is longer and wider than the previous structure, which was closed in early 2020. WTOP’s Dave Dildine contributed to this report.
