DC’s 11th Street Bridge reopens after jackknifed tractor-trailer, fuel spill

The inbound 11th Street Bridge across Southeast D.C.’s Anacostia River was closed for several hours before dawn Tuesday due to a serious crash and fuel spill from a jackknifed tractor-trailer.

The WTOP Traffic Center reports a tractor-trailer hit the Jersey wall before 3 a.m. and leaked fuel from a ruptured saddle tank. Using a heavy-duty tow, crews worked to clear the crash for the next four hours.

A District Department of Transportation spokesman said no fuel spilled into the river.

District traffic officials report all westbound lanes of I-695 at I-295 reopened to traffic around 7 a.m.

Downtown-bound commuters using the nearby Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge as an alternative route should expect residual delays due to congestion.

For the latest road and traffic conditions, see WTOP’s traffic page or listen to updates every 10 minutes online or on the air at 103.5 FM.
