Northbound BW Parkway reopens following shooting investigation

All lanes of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway closed after a shooting Wednesday have reopened, but delays continue.

As of 7 p.m., delays are approximately 3 1/2 miles.

The U.S. Park Police closed the northbound lanes at Route 198 and Route 32 in Laurel, Maryland, to investigate the shooting.

Traffic was diverted onto Route 198, said Dave Dildine in the WTOP Traffic Center.

“Northbound drivers are sent off the parkway and onto Route 198 eastbound over to Route 32,” DIldine said. “From Route 32, some of those drivers are reconnecting with the parkway to continue northbound, while others are in heavy westbound work-around traffic between the parkway and I-95.”

There was also a crash in the southbound lanes; most lanes were blocked for about an hour, and it’s unclear whether the crash is related to the shooting.

Md. traffic deaths rose last year even with fewer drivers on the road

Less traffic last year amid pandemic-related closures did not translate into fewer traffic deaths on Maryland roads. In fact, there were more deadly crashes in Maryland in 2020 compared to the year before. Overall, despite fewer drivers on the road, a total of 569 people were killed on Maryland roadways last year — an increase of 6.4% — according to the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration.
