Last Saturday, thousands gathered in D.C. for the ninth day of protests following the May 25 killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody.

Demonstrators, braving the heat and the risk of coronavirus, assembled at the Lincoln Memorial in support of the city’s largest Black Lives Matter rally.

Among them stood activist Roger Campbell II, with a response to a question many non-black supporters have asked: How can I help?

He read portions of his essay, brought many to tears, and he challenged them to see life through the lens of a black experience.
