Pedestrian killed in Rockville collision

A driver hit and killed a pedestrian Wednesday morning in the Twinbrook area of Rockville, Maryland.

The victim was hit around 7:20 a.m. in the 2000 block of McAuliffe Drive near the Lotte Plaza Market. The victim, identified as Chandra Perera, was walking to her job at a day care center when she was struck, NBC Washington reported. She was taken to a hospital where she died, Montgomery County police said.

Police identified the driver as 54-year-old Sylvia McNickle, of Rockville. Preliminary investigation found that McNickle was traveling eastbound on McAuliffe Drive in a Chevy Suburban, when she struck the victim who was trying to cross the street. McNickle stayed on the scene.

A portion of McAuliffe between Linthicum Street and Farragut Avenue was closed for the police investigation.
