French Open: Australia’s Ashleigh Barty triumphs over Marketa Vondrousova

23-year-old Ashleigh Barty from Australia has won her first Major at a Grand Slam event after defeating 19-year-old Marketa Vondrousova from the Czech Republic at today’s final of the French Open.

The score was 6-1, 6-3.

Both players had never made a major single’s semifinal before this tournament, with Barty joining champions Garbine Muguruza (2016), Jelena Ostapenko (2017) and Simona Halep (2018) as players who won their first ever Slam championship in Paris.

DC tennis is back with fans in the stands

The D.C. summer tradition of watching professional tennis in Rock Creek Park is back with fans allowed to attend the Citi Open scheduled for July 31 to Aug. 8. “Like so many Washingtonians over five decades, this tournament has been a huge part of my life,” said Citi Open chairman and chief executive officer Mark Ein, who started as a ball-boy at the tournament.
