WASHINGTON — The Takoma Park, Maryland, officer who wounded a man in Wednesday’s shootout near the D.C. border has been identified.

Charles Hoetzel, a 10-year veteran of the department, has been placed on paid administrative leave as D.C. police internal affairs detectives continue their investigation, according to a tweet Friday from the Takoma Park Police Department.

The incident occurred just after 7 p.m. Wednesday. Hoetzel had been chasing Kenneth Carroll, 19, on foot when they crossed over from Maryland into the District, according to D.C. police. Carroll allegedly pulled a gun and fired at the officer around the 200 block of Sheridan Street Northeast.

Hoetzel fired back, wounding Carroll. He and the officer were both treated with non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect’s weapon was also recovered.

Carroll, of Northeast D.C., is accused of assault on a police officer while armed and of carrying a pistol without a license.
