WASHINGTON — A Takoma Park police officer shot a man during an exchange of gunfire on the border between D.C. and Maryland, police said Wednesday night.

The officer, who has not been identified, was chasing the man on foot when the man pulled out a gun and fired at the officer, police said. The officer returned fire, striking the man, identified by police as 19-year-old Kenneth Carroll, of Northeast D.C.

The chase began in Maryland and crossed over into D.C. The shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 200 block of Sheridan Street in Northeast.

Both the officer and Carroll were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. Carroll has been charged with assault on a police officer while armed with a gun and carrying a pistol without a license.

Police said they recovered Carroll’s weapon after the shooting.

D.C. police will lead the investigation into the shooting, a Takoma Park police spokesman said earlier.
