Caps, and Lord Stanley, celebrate at Don Tito in Clarendon

CLARENDON, Va. — The Stanley Cup Champion Washington Capitals returned home Friday evening and gathered on a roof deck in Clarendon to celebrate.

Starting with TJ Oshie and Matt Niskanen, Caps players rolled into Don Tito on Wilson Boulevard, shaking hands with law enforcement and restaurant employees before heading upstairs.

Lord Stanley arrived in a separate van with Kentucky license plates, and Caps enforcer Tom Wilson was there to greet and raise the trophy for the adoring fans outside of the restaurant.

Sporadically throughout the evening the Caps players would hoist the Cup over the balcony on the roofdeck as fans serenaded them “We Want the Cup” chants. At one point the players even attempted to shower the crowd below with champagne.

After some of the players arrived, head coach Barry Trotz made his way into Don Tito as well. Some of the fans appealed for Trotz to stay (Trotz’ contract expires on July 1).

The Caps took down the Vegas Golden Knights in five games to capture their first Stanley Cup in franchise history.

The Stanley Cup window is still open for the Washington Capitals. On paper, the team that won it all two years ago has the depth and talent to win another championship. Of course, the game is still played on ice. After winning the Metropolitan Division in the regular season, the Capitals had a chance at the top seed in the Eastern Conference, but managed only one win and five goals in three games in the round-robin tournament for playoff seeding. So, the Capitals will be a third seed as they open a best-of-seven first-round playoff series against the New York Islanders on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
