DC chef takes home James Beard Award

WASHINGTON — Jeremiah Langhorne, executive chef at The Dabney, took home the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic at Monday night’s awards ceremony in Chicago.

Two other local chefs, Amy Brandwein of Centrolina and Tom Cunanan of Bad Saint, joined him as finalists in the category. Kevin Tien of D.C.’s Himitsu was also there as a finalist in the category of Rising Star Chef of the Year, as was José Andrés, who was recognized with the James Beard 2018 Humanitarian of the Year award.

The Best New Restaurant award was presented to Seattle’s JuneBaby, and Gabrielle Hamilton of New York’s Prune restaurant took home the award for Outstanding Chef. The James Beard Awards are considered one of the highest forms of recognition in the food industry.

Chef Ham El-Waylly joins WTOP to dish on his new cookbook, food trends and risk taking

Ham El-Waylly said he was taught to “question everything" in his first fine dining job, at wd~50, the former New York City restaurant owned by chef Wylie Dufresne. With this kind of thinking, El-Waylly said it helped "activate that part of my brain where … everything doesn't need to be just black and white. There's a lot of fun in the grays, and that's kind of where I like to live. And there's a lot of gray in this cookbook."
