WASHINGTON — The Alexandria City Council has taken another step forward in changing the name of Jefferson Davis Highway to Richmond Highway in the Virginia city. The council has agreed to vote on the name change on June 23.

At Tuesday evening’s city council meeting, the council accepted the report of an ad hoc advisory group recommending the name change and agreed that the city manager will introduce an ordinance with the name change at the first legislative meeting in early June.

That would clear the way for a public hearing followed by a vote on June 23.

“This would give the residents and businesses in that area the opportunity to change any contact information, print any new materials or change any signage that they might need to do, and it would give the city the opportunity to replace the signs,” said Craig Fifer, director of communications and public information for Alexandria and staff liaison to the ad hoc advisory group on renaming Jefferson Davis Highway.

“The cost to the city is about $27,000 to replace about 20 signs,” Fifer added.

The city is aiming to change the name on Jan. 1, 2019.
