Jose Andres makes Time 100 list of most influential people

WASHINGTON — D.C. chef José Andres is among the 100 people Time considers this year’s most influential.

Andres makes the list for hurricane relief efforts in Haiti and Puerto Rico.

In the Time 100 entry for Andres, written by fellow star chef Emeril Lagasse, his food also gets accolades, calling him a brilliant restaurateur who has shaped America’s culinary history and course by introducing his distinctive take on Spanish food and culture.

“But José is also a hero whose greatness transcends culinary excellence. His relief efforts in natural-disaster-stricken places like Haiti and Puerto Rico have had profound and lasting effects. By providing meals to people in dire and desperate situations, he not only ends their hunger — he offers them a powerful sense of hope for the future,” Lagasse wrote.

Not mentioned was Andres’ high-profile criticism of President Donald Trump over immigration issues and worker rights.

Andres, who also was on the Time 100 list in 2012, is in good company.

He is listed in the list’s “Titans” group, which also includes Oprah Winfrey, Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk.

A record 45 people on this year’s list are under age 40.

Profile writers include influential people themselves, including Barack Obama, Bill Gates, Cher, Steve Case and Sean “Diddy” Combs.
