DC-grown Urban Stems now nationwide, partners with Vogue

WASHINGTON — January was a big month for the D.C.-founded floral startup UrbanStems.

Earlier in the month, the company announced its plans to partner with fashion giant Vogue for a limited-edition line of bouquets created by the magazine’s editors.

“Vogue is the ultimate brand and expert on fashion around the globe, and so for us to be able to combine forces with them is really powerful,” said UrbanStems co-founder Ajay Kori, who confirmed that yes, even Anna Wintour, herself, will be designing a bouquet.

Straying from its more budget-friendly bouquets, which start at $35, the Vogue-designed buds cost $138. And now, you’ll be able to get UrbanStems’ Vogue flowers — and others on the website — anywhere in the country.

On Jan. 31, UrbanStems announced it’s expanding its reach with free shipping nationwide. Previously, the company ran on a model of free same-day delivery via a courier in select cities, including D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York.

Launched on Valentine’s Day in 2014, UrbanStems started with Kori and co-founder Jeff Sheely delivering flowers to their friends out of the startup’s “headquarters” — a closet in a basement at 18th and M Streets NW. Now, the company has six operation centers throughout the East Coast and more than 100 employees.
