Remains of Maryland student sought in Mississippi dig

FERNWOOD, Miss. (AP) — Investigators have dug up another southwest Mississippi location, seeking clues to what happened to a Maryland college student who disappeared in May 1995.

The Enterprise-Journal reports that archeaologists and investigators spent days probing soil in a wooded area of Pike County for remains of Donald Lee Izzett Jr. of Cumberland, Maryland.

Izzett left on a cross-country trip after his freshman year, and his mother last heard from him when he called from California, crying and seeking money to return home.

District Attorney’s investigator Truett Simmons says Izzett was last seen in Pike County or New Orleans and authorities believe he was killed.

Previous searches in Pike County for Izzett in the late 1990s, December 2016 and last April have been fruitless.

Izzett’s mother, Debra Skelley, was present but declined to comment.
