WASHINGTON — D.C. police have identified the former Uber driver who is accused of trying to sexually assault a female passenger over the weekend, and they are asking the public’s help to track him down.

Police identified Selvin Chocooj, 32, of Oxon Hill, Maryland, on Wednesday as the suspect. He is wanted on a charge of assault with intent to commit first-degree sexual abuse.

A woman told police she was getting a ride in the District around 4 a.m. Sunday when the driver parked a few blocks from the U.S. Capitol — in the 400 block of East Capitol Street SE — and tried to take off her pants.

She said when she yelled, the driver punched and strangled her before she managed to get away. She was treated at a hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening.

Chocooj is described as a Hispanic man, 5 feet 7 inches tall, and 165 pounds with medium build. He was last seen driving a dark-colored, four-door sedan.

An Uber spokesperson told NBC Washington that Chocooj is no longer allowed to drive for the company.
