City takes suggestions online to rename Jeff Davis Highway

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) — A Northern Virginia city is conducting an online survey seeking suggestions for renaming Jefferson Davis Highway.

In parts of Alexandria, the highway designated as U.S. 1 is also named for the man who served as president of the Confederacy during the Civil War. Last year, the Alexandria city council voted unanimously to begin the process of renaming the highway.

An advisory group working on the name change has posted a survey on the city’s website soliciting ideas for new names.

The survey will run through Sept. 15.

The advisory group is expected to recommend a new name to the city manager in October.
