Police: Crash, downed pole shuts down Edsall Rd. for hours

WASHINGTON — A car crash on Edsall Road in Virginia between Alexandria and Springfield downed a utility pole and sent electrified power lines across the road, Fairfax County police said, forcing them to shut down a stretch of the heavily-driven road for hours.

There is no traffic between Clifton Street and Cherokee Road in either direction, but authorities have set up a detour.

The following intersections are affected.

  • Edsall Road at Cherokee Avenue
  • Edsall Road at Bloomfield Drive
  • Edsall Road at Beryl Road
  • Edsall Road at Timber Forest Drive
  • Backlick Road at Leesville Boulevard

Around 9:30 a.m., police said they expect the road to be closed for eight hours.

That will make journey home tough for many.

According to police, a single car collided with a utility pole at Carolina Place.

Police are investigating.
