Redskins fire GM Scot McCloughan; key players sign with other teams

WASHINGTON — The Washington Redskins have fired general manager Scot McCloughan, effective immediately. In addition, several of the team’s key players have signed with other teams. Redskins President Bruce Allen issued a release Thursday evening that McCloughan, who has been with the team for two years, would no longer be with the Redskins. “We wish him success in his future endeavors. The team will have no further comment on his departure. The organization remains confident in our personnel department as we execute our free agency plans as well as prepare for the upcoming NFL Draft,” Allen said in the statement. DeSean Jackson and Chris Baker signed with Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Wide receiver Pierre Garcon will be reunited with former Redskins offensive coordinator and current San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan, having signed with the 49ers. Jackson signed a three-year contract worth $33.5 million, with $20 million guaranteed. Baker signed a three-year contract with $5.25 million per year. Garcon signed for three years for $29 million.

NFL quarterback Alex Smith suffered a gruesome leg injury that put his career in jeopardy and had him fighting for his life, and his long and grueling road to recovery is chronicled in an upcoming one-hour program from ESPN called "Project 11." The leg injury occurred Nov. 18, 2018, in the third quarter of a game between the Washington Redskins and Houston Texans. After being sacked by the Texans' J.J. Watt and Kareem Jackson, Smith suffered a spiral and compound fracture of the right tibia and fibula.
