Virginia liquor stores open on New Year’s Day for 1st time

WASHINGTON — If you plan on keeping the holiday festivities going on New Year’s Day, don’t worry about running out of beverages. Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control stores will be open Jan. 1 for the first time.

Virginia liquor stores will be open from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on New Year’s Day, which are the normal operating hours for a Sunday.

This will be the first year ABC stores are open on the holiday thanks to a new law that went into effect July 1, according to the department. The legislation allowed ABC locations, which are the only retail locations in Virginia where customers can buy hard liquor — to open their doors earlier on Sunday and on New Year’s Day.

ABC made the announcement earlier this month when it published its holiday hours.
