WASHINGTON — A former Montgomery County elementary school teacher is facing more charges of sexual abuse, in addition to earlier charges involving two 11-year-old girls, police said. 

John Vigna, 50, of Silver Spring was arrested Thursday after turning himself in to police. He was previously arrested in June for sexual abuse charges while he was a teacher at Cloverly Elementary School in Silver Spring. The two victims had been students at the school.

Additional charges have surfaced since the initial arrest, according to Montgomery County police: Three more victims have come to police, alleging that Vigna had also sexually abused them while they were students at Cloverly.

A woman in her 20s said she had been sexually abused by Vigna while she was a student from 2000-02. A girl said she had been sexually abused while at the school from 2013-14, and another girl was sexually abused there from 2015-16.

Police have charged Vigna with two additional counts of sexual abuse of a minor, child abuse exploitation and three additional counts of third-degree sexual offense.

He has been ordered held without bond.

Police advise parents of students who have had Vigna as a teacher to talk to them about their interactions with him. If they believe their child has been victimized, they should call the Special Victims Investigations Division at (240) 773-5400.
