Montgomery Co. Board of Ed votes for earlier school start date

WASHINGTON — Montgomery County’s Board of Education has voted to start classes before Labor Day.

Normally that wouldn’t be news, but this year Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan issued an executive order mandating that classes start after Labor Day, so the local school board will have to ask for a waiver.

The local school board voted Monday to ask for an exception so classes could start Aug. 28 and end by June 14.

In August, Hogan issued his order for the later start date for schools, declaring that the later start time is good for the state’s economy. Maryland’s Bureau of Revenue Estimates conducted a study in 2013 that stated a later start to the school year could help generate more than $74 million in economic activity in the state.

The Maryland State Board of Education is expected to take up the issue of waivers for area school systems later this month.
