ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman is exploring ways of taking expedited action against Sheriff James Fitzgerald over alleged racist and sexist comments outlined in a county investigation.

Kittleman announced Monday he has directed the county’s law office to explore “any and all legal means” through the court system for Fitzgerald’s removal.

Last week, Kittleman urged members of the county’s delegation to the General Assembly to explore options to impeach the sheriff. Kittleman says he continues to hear concerns that impeachment won’t happen fast enough, and he says he agrees.

Fitzgerald has said he doesn’t plan to resign, despite mounting pressure from officials.

The Howard County Office of Human Rights released a report substantiating claims Fitzgerald created a hostile work environment by making derogatory comments about African-Americans, women and Jews.
