BALTIMORE (AP) — Authorities say a former Baltimore City public works employee has been sentenced to two years in prison for stealing scrap metal from the landfill he worked at and selling it.

Jarrod Terrell Hazelton of Parkville was sentenced Tuesday and ordered to pay $400,000 in restitution.

The 33-year-old worked for the Baltimore Department of Public Works at the Quarantine Road Landfill.

Officials say he and other public works employees collected metal from the landfill, paid their supervisors to not report them and used their personal pickup trucks to take it to a private salvage company and sell it.

Baltimore sells recyclable scrap metal at its trash collection facilities to generate revenue for the city. Officials say Hazelton’s scheme cost the city at least $400,000 in lost revenue.
