WASHINGTON — Several hundred family members, friends and classmates gathered on Monday to remember Patrick Shifflett, a Montgomery County high school junior, who died last week in a horrific accident.

“He lived more in his 18 years than many people that lived 80,” said Porter Shifflett, Patrick Shifflett’s uncle.

Patrick Shifflett, 17-year-old Jacob Dennis and 17-year-old Cary Greene, all students at Clarksburg High School, were killed when Dennis’ pickup truck veered off a road and slammed into a tree near Damascus.

Police say a combination of speed and driver inexperience were factors in the crash.

But the day was about remembering Patrick Shifflett, a Laytonsville resident. Family members received condolences before the funeral at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

“He was an athlete, a scholar, a son, a brother. But most importantly, a great friend to all,” said Porter Shifflett.

“I just can’t think of a more respectful, intelligent, driven and purposeful person,” he added.

And still filled with surprises.

“We’re learning about ways in which Patrick touched people that we never even knew of,” he said.
