DC assistant chief Newsham 1 of 3 in running to head Phoenix police

PHOENIX (AP) — The initial 65 applicants seeking to become Phoenix’s next police chief were whittled down to nine semifinalists and now to three finalists, including two current and former chiefs for Arizona’s most populous city.

Phoenix officials say finalists Mike Kurtenbach, Peter Newsham and Jeri Williams successfully completed initial interviews and will participate in a June 6 public forum and a final interview with top city officials.

Kurtenbach is currently an assistant chief for Phoenix while Williams is a former Phoenix assistant chief who currently is police chief in Oxnard, California.

The third finalist is Peter Newsham, an assistant chief for the District of Columbia’s police department.

Phoenix is trying to fill the position before Chief Joseph Yahner retires in October. He was appointed in February 2015.
