WASHINGTON — The Washington Capitals avoided elimination Saturday with a 3-1 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Verizon Center.

The Penguins now lead the second-round series 3-2 with Game 6 on Tuesday in Pittsburgh.

Alex Ovechkin and T.J. Oshie each had a goal and assist for the Capitals, while Justin Williams added an insurance marker midway through the second period. Braden Holtby made 30 saves in the win, with a Chris Kunitz power-play goal the only blemish on Holtby’s record.

Ovechkin and Oshie both scored on the power play for Washington, as the Capitals went 2-for-5 with the man advantage after scoring just once on 12 power-play opportunities in the first four games of the series.

Ovechkin’s 13th career postseason power-play goal tied him with Peter Bondra for the franchise record.
