Rental prices rise again in D.C. area

WASHINGTON — Area pocketbooks may again be feeling a bit of a pinch from rising rental prices.

Over the past year, rents for the region’s newer, more upscale apartments grew at their fastest pace since 2010, rising 2.6 percent, according to numbers from the real estate firm Delta Associates.

The change was even more pronounced in the District, where those rents rose 4 percent in the past year. Rents for the same types of units rose 2.4 percent in Northern Virginia and 2 percent in suburban Maryland.

The average rent for one of those apartments, known as Class A, now sits at $1,956 regionwide. Broken down by area, the average is $1,867 in Northern Virginia, $1,774 in suburban Maryland and $2,543 in D.C.

However, price growth is expected to cool off this year as even more new apartments come on the market.
