Tax prep software confusing Falls Church City with Fairfax Co.

WASHINGTON – There is Falls Church and there is Falls Church City, the 2.2-square-mile community which is not part of Fairfax County, and tax preparation software companies continue to confuse the two.

The City of Falls Church Commissioner of the Revenue office says many tax prep software companies provide the incorrect filing address for Falls Church addresses within Fairfax County.

“Each year we receive hundreds of tax documents from Fairfax County residents that should be mailed directly to Richmond,” said Tom Clinton, revenue commissioner for the City of Falls Church. “That could cause a delay in processing those returns. We’ve been trying for years to correct the filing address error in tax prep software, but the change is slow.”

The glitch appears to apply only to filers who choose to mail their returns, not electronically file them.

The revenue office says filers should double check the locality code on their tax return. The City of Falls Church is 610 and Fairfax County is 059.

Taxpayers should double check which applies to them. Falls Church residents can determine if they live within the City of Falls Church or the Fairfax County portions of Falls Church by checking FallsChurchVa.gov.
