(CINCINNATI) — It’s good news for Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton. He won’t need surgery to repair his broken thumb, coach Marvin Lewis said Monday.

Dalton broke his right thumb Sunday while tackling Pittsburgh’s Stephon Tuitt.

Lewis said a hand specialist determined Dalton will not need to undergo a procedure that could have kept him off the field for a time beyond the final weeks of the regular season, ESPN reported.

The quarterback’s recovery will now be evaluated week-to-week, but it won’t be based pain management, said Lewis.

It’s a “healing situation,” he said.

AJ McCarron will start at quarterback Sunday when the Bengals face the 49ers in San Francisco.
