They say the best things in life are free and sometimes that’s definitely true. If you’re planning a cross country trip or regularly travel near any of these areas, it’s worth stopping by each of the sites below. They are completely free and totally worth a detour.
1. The Biggest Ball of Twine in Cawker City, Kansas
Not to be confused with the other two “Biggest Balls of Twine,” Cawker City is not one to miss. Aside from actually being the Biggest Ball of Twine (it beat the one in Darwin, Minnesota, which is now the Biggest Ball of Twine Made By One Man and is bigger than the one in St. Louis, which is really the Heaviest Ball of Twine), the entire city gets into the twine spirit.
The best time to visit is August during the annual twine-a-thon (oh yeah, that’s a real thing). It’s a city-wide festival and during it more twine is added to the twine ball. Visitors can help!
If you don’t make it during the twine-a-thon, there are still spectacular photo opportunities available and a twine line you can follow along downtown that takes you to pictures of the twine ball painted throughout the city.
If you really wanted to add some twine to the Twine Ball but can’t make the Twine-a-thon, you can arrange through the town to make your addition on your next visit. And although it’s not free, there’s also a gift store with every kind of collectible item you may need to commemorate your stop.
2. Giant Pistachio in Alamogordo, New Mexico
For the purists who only want to see the actual largest pistachio in the world, this stop may not be for you, because the pistachio is indeed concrete. This does not affect the awesome pictures you can take with it, though.
But pictures alone do not make the perfect roadside stop. The giant pistachio is in the parking lot of McGinnis’ Pistachio Tree Ranch and inside you can find all the different kinds of pistachios you may ever want, along with countless free samples.
The Tree Ranch also boasts a fair bit of eclectic decor and some animatronics that really add ambiance. The real kicker, though, is that the Pistachio Tree Ranch also hosts a small winery and along with amazing pictures of a giant pistachio and free pistachio samples, they also have a free wine tasting for anyone over the age of 21.
So while the stop can be 100 percent free, if you love pistachios or wine, you may want to add $20 to your budget before stopping here.
3. World’s Largest Tooth in Trenton, New Jersey
Besides making for a great photo opportunity, the World’s Largest Tooth is also within walking distance of a giant mariachi band and dancers and a massive version of the American Gothic couple.
You can pose with and on the tooth, but the real kicker is the additional sculpture of an older couple staring at the tooth about 10 feet away from it.
Additionally, as you drive through Hamilton Township, you can find a large variety of sculptures along the road to stop and check out. Trenton is home to the Grounds for Sculpture. If you opt to spend $15, it’s a pretty cool place to check out, but with the wide variety of art through the town and the world’s largest tooth at your disposal for free, it’s not necessary.
4. Carhenge in Alliance, Nebraska
You may think there’s a lot of nothing in the Midwest, but besides being naturally beautiful, quite a few interesting roadside attractions reside in that area of America and Carhenge in one of the best.
Carhenge is an art installation made to model Stonehenge. It’s built entirely out of cars and car parts and was painted stone grey to look more like the original Stonehenge in England. It took 39 automobiles to create Carhenge.
In addition to Carhenge is a lovely little sculpture garden full of some really odd offerings. It makes for a nice little stroll to stretch your legs on a long drive.
And if no trip to a roadside attraction is complete for you without spending a few dollars on shot glasses, stickers or anything else emblazoned with the roadside attractions name, Carhenge does have a gift shop and the proceeds go to the maintenance of the attraction.
