COLLEGE PARK, Md. — It’s Election Day in Maryland, and voters are casting their ballots for city mayors and council members.

Seats are up for grabs in the cities of Rockville, Takoma Park, Gaithersburg, Bowie, College Park, Greenbelt and Laurel.  Polls are open between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m.

In College Park, whoever is elected mayor will make history: Councilwoman Denise Mitchell would become the city’s first black female mayor; Councilman Patrick  Wojahn would be the first gay man to hold the office.

In the City Council race, one candidate has been criticized for his embellished resume. Cory Sanders amended statements about his job history and education on his website after The Washington Post questioned him about it. He also is being sued by his former company for fraud.

In Rockville, there was some controversy about the early voting machines — not all of the candidates were on the same screen — but voters Tuesday will be using paper ballots, which will not have that problem.

For the first time in Rockville history, the mayor and council will serve four-year terms.

Laurel Mayor Craig A. Moe is running unopposed. This will be his fourth term as city mayor.
