WASHINGTON (AP) _ Police documents show that a patient who died after being restrained by hospital security guards had a broken vertebra.

Documents obtained by The Washington Post show that the man, identified as 74-year-old James McBride, had a broken vertebra near the base of his neck, but don’t say how the injury occurred.

D.C. police are investigating McBride’s death Thursday at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Hospital officials have said he hadn’t been discharged and was being escorted back to the hospital when the interaction occurred.

The medical examiner’s office said Tuesday that the cause of death is pending the completion of an autopsy.

Relatives issued a statement through the hospital describing McBride as “a loving husband to his wife of 40 years, and a wonderful father to his son and daughter.”
