Search teams find Va. hiker alive after 3 days lost in Maine

WASHINGTON — Missing for three days, a 78-year-old  hiker from Northern Virginia was found alive Sunday at a state park in Maine.

According to WCSH 6, John Lyon, a resident of Dumfries, was spotted on a rock slide at Baxter State Park. He was rescued by helicopter and taken to a hospital.

Park officials said in a Facebook post that Lyon appeared to be in good condition.

The TV station reports that Lyon, an experienced hiker, left three companions at around 1:30 p.m. Thursday in order to hike ahead and disappeared. The rescue effort began Friday, according to Baxter State Park officials said.

They credited his “positive attitude and exceptional fitness and for trying, in the end successfully, to help himself. ”
