WASHINGTON — Commuters who use Randolph Road should get ready for a weeklong road closure. From July 18 through the following weekend, the road will be closed near the at-grade railroad crossing at Nebel Street, in Rockville, Maryland, while CSX performs track repairs.

Randolph Road will be closed between Nebel Street and Parklawn Drive while CSX crews repair and replace the tracks. Montgomery County police say they will set up detours for eastbound traffic as far away as Montrose Parkway. Westbound drivers on Randolph Road should expect to be diverted onto Parklawn Drive.

The work could be finished Friday, July 24, but will likely last through Sunday, July 26.

“The crossing has gotten rough over time,” says CSX spokesman Rob Doolittle, adding that the road surface has become weathered over the years.

“As part of our regular maintenance program, we’ll be removing the crossing surface to make it smoother for vehicles to drive over.”

The crossing has proved to be an obstacle for drivers in the past. The electronic arms and signals have malfunctioned several times over the past year, often locked in a down position.

CSX will also close a portion of Route 5 in Waldorf this weekend for track work between Route 301 and Mattawoman Drive. Route 5, Mattawoman Beantown Road, is expected to reopen by 5 a.m. on Monday, July 20.
