Trooper struck on I-395, man charged with DUI

WASHINGTON — A Virginia State Police trooper was hurt early Saturday when he was struck by a car driven by a man police say was under the influence of alcohol.

Koon was assisting a fellow officer with a DUI investigation along southbound I-395, north of Exit 3 at about 3:15 a.m., according to a police press release.  Koon’s patrol vehicle was positioned behind the other trooper’s vehicle with emergency lights activated, when a 2013 Infiniti ran into the back of Koon’s vehicle.

Koon suffered a minor injury to his head as a result, and was treated by medical personnel at the scene.

The driver of the Infiniti, Dilzzola Kunia, 38, of Alexandria, Va., was not injured in the crash. He was arrested for DUI and transported to the Alexandria Adult Detention Center.

The initial DUI suspect and other officer were not injured in the crash.

Additional charges are pending. The crash remains under investigation.
