Petroleum spill reported in Arlington Co. waterway

WASHINGTON — Crews were cleaning up a petroleum spill along a creek in Arlington Wednesday morning.

The Arlington County Parks Department reported the spill about 10:40 a.m. near Campbell Avenue and Four Mile Run, close to the Shirlington dog park, says Arlington County Fire spokesman Brian McGraw.

McGraw said the product has an odor consistent with petroleum, but it is unclear if it is oil or gasoline.

He said a hazardous materials team was on the scene to clean up the mess and prevent the product from spreading downstream.

McGraw said it had not spread so far.
