WASHINGTON — George Huguely V, of Chevy Chase, Maryland is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn his conviction for the 2010 murder of former girlfriend Yeardley Love of Cockeysville, Maryland.

Lawyers for the former University of Virginia lacrosse player filed a petition with the country’s highest court, to overturn his 2012 conviction for second-degree murder of Love. Huguely was sentenced to 23 years in prison.

Charlottesville’s Daily Progress reports the now 27-year-old Huguely argues his Sixth Amendment rights were violated when one of his two attorneys felt ill, and was not able to be present in court for some of the trial.

Appeals attorney Paul Clement argues Huguely’s right to competent assistance was violated because he could not have both lawyers in court.

This will likely be Huguely’s last chance to appeal his conviction. Virginia’s Court of Appeals affirmed his conviction, and the Virginia Supreme Court twice rejected Huguely’s request to be heard.

Love also was a lacrosse player at the University of Virginia.
