WASHINGTON — Drivers should expect delays when traveling through the Third Street Tunnel the next two weekends as construction work begins on the multi-building Capitol Crossing development.

Construction will close the Second Street exit ramp from northbound Interstate 395 to Massachusetts Avenue NW, according to the District Department of Transportation.

The off-ramp will be closed from 7 a.m. Saturday, June 13 through 5 a.m. Monday, June 15 and again the following weekend from 7 a.m., Saturday, June 20 through 5 a.m. Monday, June 22.

Workers will be demolishing a retaining wall near the Second Street off-ramp — part of the prep work for the $1.3 billion development, which will be constructed over the interstate.

Drivers should expect heavy congestion and should consider alternate routes, DDOT says.

The D Street exit south of Second Street and the New York Avenue exit north of Second Street will remain open.

Starting this week, Massachusetts Avenue and H Street will be closed in both directions from 2nd Street to 4th Street as a high voltage power line is moved. The road closures will take place from 7 p.m. to midnight on Mondays and Tuesdays and on weekends from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. Daytime lane closures are also possible during the week.

Drivers should expect the closures to last through July.
