Virginia toddler dies after accidentally shooting self

LUNENBURG, Va. (AP) — Police say a toddler has died from injuries suffered when he accidentally shot himself with a handgun.

The Lunenburg County Sheriff’s Office tells media outlets that the 2-year-old boy died on Wednesday.

The shooting occurred on Monday morning at a residence in the Meherrin area.

Police say the boy was alone in a bedroom when he found a loaded handgun on top of a dresser and accidentally fired the weapon. The boy and his parents were visiting the residence.

The incident remains under investigation. The boy’s name hasn’t been released.
