EARLIER: WASHINGTON – Several Metro lines were experiencing delays late Monday due to fire department activity and reports of smoke in the tunnel at Metro Center. A spokesperson for D.C. Fire says there was a small transformer explosion in the station, and crews were working to fix the problem. According to Metro, the Orange, Silver and Blue lines were single tracking between Smithsonian and McPherson Square as a result. Bus service was established to get around the Metro Center closure, and and trains were bypassing Metro Center. Metro has not said if normal service will resume Tuesday morning. Earlier in the day, two smoke incidents caused major delays and overcrowding during the morning commute, impacting thousands of passengers. Regular service resumed about 2 p.m.
