WASHINGTON — You never know what you’ll see in the New York subway, and while often that’s not a good thing, travelers got a musical surprise as U2 performed on a platform Monday night. The band is in New York in advance of a Friday-night appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,” and headed down to the S train platform at Grand Central Station, the New York Daily News reports. One fan caught them in the middle of a rendition of “Angel of Harlem,” complete with crowd singalong:

And while Fallon was spotted in the crowd, there’s no confirmation the subway performance will become part of the “Tonight Show” appearance. It seems likely, however, given the get-ups they evidently started in.

It is known, though, that lead singer Bono and Fallon filmed a bit spoofing the singer’s Central Park bicycle accident from last November. And in another only-in-New-York touch, one of the best photos of Monday’s happening came from celebrity chef Mario Batali.
