Drone strike review…Petraeus sentenced…Lynch confirmed

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says there was no information that civilians were present when CIA drone strikes in Pakistan killed two aid workers, an American and an Italian. Obama blamed the “fog of war” and promised a review to prevent a repeat of the mistake. The two hostages were being held by al-Qaida. The attacks did kill two high-ranking members of the terror network, Americans Ahmed Farouq and Adam Gadahn.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Former CIA Director David Petraeus says he looks forward to the next phase of his life. He was sentenced to two years’ probation and fined $100,000 for giving a mistress classified material while she was working on his biography. The sentencing came two months after Petraeus agreed to plead guilty to a federal misdemeanor count of unauthorized removal and retention of classified material.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says he is willing to pursue international commerce agreements even if they are unpopular with Democrats. Speaking to supporters in Washington, Obama is attempting to assure Democratic activists and donors that his trade policies will protect U.S. jobs and environmental rules.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore’s police commissioner says the man who died because of a fatal spinal-cord injury wasn’t placed in a seatbelt during transport. Commissioner Anthony Batts has told The Associated Press that there are no circumstances under which a prisoner should not be wearing a seatbelt during transport. Six officers are suspended and the federal government is investigating.

WASHINGTON (AP) — After a five month delay, the Senate has confirmed, Loretta Lynch, President Barack Obama’s choice to replace Attorney General Eric Holder. Lynch had wide law enforcement support and has the reputation of a no-nonsense prosecutor. The vote was 56-43. Lynch will become the first black woman to serve as attorney general.
