WASHINGTON — The U.S. Capitol and the Capitol Visitor Center were on lock-down Saturday after a shot was fired in an apparent suicide.

According to a spokesperson for U.S. Capitol Police, it happened on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol Building. The suspected shooter was “neutralized” following a self-inflicted gunshot.

Capitol Police were also investigating a suspicious package on the lower West Terrace of the U.S. Capitol Building.

The U.S. Capitol and the Capitol Visitor Center were locked down as a precaution, but the lock-down was lifted before 4 p.m.

First Street is currently closed between Independence Avenue, Southwest and Constitution Avenue, Northwest. Maryland Avenue, Southwest is also closed between First and Third streets, Southwest and Pennsylvania Avenue, Northwest is closed between First and Third streets, Northwest.
